A Coach or a Trainer?

I had a really cool experience today that got me really thinking about something that Ryan and I have talked about all along.

One of my athletes, a kid with tremendous talent, has been hounding me about when we will be opening Force Fitness and Performance. He knows that with the right training and a focused and concerted effort by himself and the Force team he could be great at what he does. He also knows that there are probably 22 hours in a day when he will not be training and to him he knows these are the hours that really "shape" a person.

He asked me if he could stick around after the workouts to see others train, to watch Ryan and I pursue with the greatest of passion our dream. He thinks that it will keep him out of trouble.

Now that is the number 1 reason I love being a coach. You can bet that I love seeing kids succeed in their selected endeavors, whatever they maybe, but honestly I just want kids to succeed. I want them to be well rounded people and fitness is one aspect of that. All along Ryan and I have spoken about this, about the value of being a "coach" and not a "trainer". A trainer counts reps, and counts dollars. A coach teaches, not just about the 2 hours you may spend with us every other day, but about how to make the right choices in the other 22 hours each day. In some cases those lessons may be about what to eat and how much rest to get, in other cases those lessons are more important.

Have a great day!
