Speed...but not with Keanu Reeves

Like a resounding chorus, every athlete I have ever worked with has one question that always seems to be on their mind: How do I get faster? The "it" phrase in almost all sports is "speed kills". So how do you develop that killer speed? Here are a couple philosophies that will not lead you astray!

1) Get stronger!
That is right, contrary to the old myth that muscle will only make you tighter and in turn slower, more muscle means one thing: you get faster! Speed is all about how much power your body can generate. The greater your body's ability to create power the easier it is to propel your body in motion.

To build the explosive power that you need, get on a program that emphasizes olympic lifting or exercises that involves a triple extension of the ankles, knees, and hips such as jump squats. Make sure that your program includes plyometric exercises to improve your ability to react to the ground.

2)Think about the Core
Your abs and hips are essential to maintaining the proper form and keeping your body position aligned when running your fastest. Extremely strong demands are placed on your body while sprinting, so these muscles need to be extremely strong as well. I suppose this just goes back to getting stronger, now doesn't it?

3) WARM UP!!!
Most athletes try to warm-up by doing the same thing, run a couple laps and then stand around and stretch. When in athletics do you ever stand around and do something statically for an 8 count? That's right, never. So why would you get "warmed-up" in a similar fashion. A proper warm-up should leave you slightly out of breath and maybe a little sweaty. A warm-up should happen in all the planes of movement that you may encounter in your workout for the day. And keep the warm-up varied, so that each and everyday you are interested. When you are interested your form will never be lacking!
